False Bay is a beautiful natural bay on the west side of San Juan Island. It has been one of my favorite places on the island for many years. It got its name because when the tide is in, it looks like it would be a nice place to bring your boat into. But when the tide is out you realize that the water is only a few feet deep. In fact you can actually walk about about a half mile across the muddy bottom before you reach deep water. (I’ve never done it myself, but I’ve seen plenty of others do so.)
